Holy Trinity by the Lake Episcopal Church to host drive, boost blood supply

Carter BloodCare concerned about more frequent blood shortages

(ROCKWALL, TX) – Each day, as many as 700 patients require blood transfusions. Critical shortages in the community blood supply in January meant that not all patients requiring a transfusion received it. While blood donors are registering to give in greater numbers now, the local blood provider, Carter BloodCare is concerned.

Seasonal lows in blood collection are common in summer and during holidays. Schools are out and people get busy with other things. However, in late 2019 and into 2020 January, Carter BloodCare faced days when fewer than 100 bags of the most common blood type – O positive – were on the shelf. An ideal number is 1,100. This quantity is not enough to support modern medical needs of community hospitals. Blood can’t be stockpiled either. It has a shelf life and is in need of replenishing.

The majority of today’s blood donors are from the World War II era and Baby Boomer generation. A much smaller number of people ages 20 to 40 are following their example.

The blood supply is improving in quantity, but blood donors are still needed to return the inventory to a healthy two-to-three day supply. It is vital that everyone begins to view blood donation as an essential support for a modern, high-tech health care system.

Holy Trinity by the Lake Episcopal Church is doing its part to boost the local blood supply by hosting a drive from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16 at 1524 Smirl Drive in the parish hall. The event is open to the community, and walk-ins are welcome. For more information, or to schedule an appointment time, contact Julia Braaten at 972-771-8242.
