YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas to host Virtual STEM Week from April 20-24

The week features free virtual learning, experiments and fun for children from preschool through high school

DALLAS (April 17, 2020) – The YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas will host a Virtual STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) workshop the week of April 20-24 so children of all ages can be introduced to STEM through fun, engaging activities. Each day, the Y will provide a STEM activity for participants using Facebook Live as a learning platform. The week will feature virtual learning, experiments, daily videos and challenges for children ages preschool through high school, and even activities the whole family can participate in. To see a full list of daily activities, visit https://www.ymcadallas.org/virtualstem.

In addition, the Y is partnering with Fluor Engineering to provide a virtual challenge and competition for all to participate. The challenges will have three phases: the Design, Experiment, and Competition Phase. Participants must attend the instructional workshop using Microsoft Teams Meeting as a learning platform. During the meeting, participants will be provided detailed instructions, helpful links and videos, and access to a Fluor representative to ask questions and learn more about their work in engineering. For more information and to register for the Fluor Engineering Virtual Challenge, please visit https://www.eventbrite.com/e/102735570858.

The Y will also feature advanced activities for high school students including hosting a virtual workshop on creating a short film with special guest screen writer, short film director and actor Eboni Adams where the top three film submissions will be streamed on YouTube and Facebook, and a Facebook Live workshop on Cybersecurity.

“Our objective is to provide students extended learning opportunities to continue fostering innovation and creativity while they are at home. As parents are looking for things to do with their kids while they are receiving virtual instruction at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, this is a great educational opportunity for kids to have fun while learning the basic components of STEM,” said Dr. Tonjia Gimble, Youth Development Director, Irving Family YMCA.
