Rockwall High School alum named Arthur Ashe NCAA Sports Scholar of the Year

(ROCKWALL, TX — May 28, 2020) Rockwall High School alum Raena Eldridge was recently named the 2020 Arthur Ashe Jr. Female Sports Scholar of the Year.

Eldridge, the team captain of the swim team at Texas A&M University for the past two years, qualified for the NCAA Championships in individual events for the first time this year. In 2019, she achieved the highest level of academics and athletics balanced by any female athlete, earning her Texas A&M’s Bill Erwin Scholar Athlete of the Year Award. She graduated with a 3.98 GPA in a double major, and was also the first author of a Veterinary research paper published by Scientific Reports.

Eldridge puts as much time into helping others as she does training in the pool. She started her own nonprofit, SPLASH, Inc., which gives free swimming lessons to low income kids. She also mentors elementary-age girls as part of the faith-based organization, Save Our Streets Ministry.

Most graduate students seek to be published. A small handful of undergraduates manage the feat. But, to do that while being a 2-year captain, and 4-time All American at a top-tier Division I swim program is unheard of,” wrote Raena’s dad Eric Eldridge in a Facebook post. “AND, in here spare time Raena also co-founded a 501 3c organization teaching water safety to low-income children in Rockwall and volunteered weekly with an inner city Christian ministry in Bryan, TX. Raena, you amaze me. Go change the world one person at a time.”
