(ROCKWALL, TX — September 28, 2018) Not even rain could put a damper on the Rockwall Rotary Club’s 32nd Annual Hot Rocks Bike Ride held on Aug. 11. In spite of the steady downpour which persisted throughout most of the morning, 500 riders checked in to race for a great cause. The ride netted over $37,000, which will fund future college scholarships for graduates of Rockwall ISD’s public high schools.
The top three male finishers were Kyle Swanson – first, Bret Crosby – second, and Mat Stephens – third. The order of the top three female finishers was Solyma Rivera – first, Rebecca Brown – second, and Sally Freedman – third.
When designing the course each year, the club aims to create safe routes while minimizing traffic congestion. Hot Rocks Chair Greg Blair said the event’s volunteers accomplished a major objective for this year’s ride. He said the club improved directional signage while manning all critical intersections with volunteers or safety officers.
“While we obviously could not control the weather for an outside event like the ride, the Rockwall Rotary Club held a safe, enjoyable ride that reflected most favorably on the club, our community, event sponsors, and volunteers, while continuing to provide funds for its scholarship program.”
This year’s ride included 12, 24, and 42 mile routes and the main event: a 56 mile course. Six rest stops, ranging from five to 10 miles apart, fueled riders with ice cold water, hydration drinks, and fresh fruit. Hot Rocks participants also received a free t-shirt, swag bag and delicious lunch provided by Applebee’s and Luby’s.
