Rockwall Community Playhouse to present Romeo & Juliet

Brandon Whitfield and Kenzie Osborne as Romeo and Juliet.

ROCKWALL, TX (Jan. 10, 2015) William Shakespeare’s masterpiece Romeo & Juliet opens at Rockwall Community Playhouse in February, the month celebrating love. Come experience the beauty, poetry and passion of  Shakespeare’s greatest romance, where love and violence vie for the hearts and souls of young, star-crossed lovers.

Performance dates are Feb. 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21 and 22 at RCP, 609 E. Rusk. Show times are 8 p.m. Fridays & Saturdays; and 2 p.m. Sundays.

Director Steve Golin, who is usually found onstage, is directing the drama.

“I love Shakespeare. There’s a care and thoughtfulness to every syllable just not found with most other writers. Watching the ‘light come on’ when the actors find the meaning for themselves in those sometimes foreign phrases is a joy,” said Golin.

They say that couples who play together—stay together. RCP veterans, Victoria Sawyer (Apothecary) and Preston Wells (Paris) are a newly-engaged couple who certainly believe the saying to be true. They starred together in the RCP production of The Foreigner last fall. With a wedding date set in early 2016, Victoria and Preston are just one of the couples who are part of the cast.

Married 21 years, Ike and Mary Thacker are experiencing their first time together onstage. However, they have been cast as mortal enemies, as Ike is playing the role of Montague, and Mary is Lady Capulet.

“It’s pretty unusual to have both my stage husband and my actual husband always wanting to kill each other,” smiles Mary.

Another offstage couple, Kenzie Osborne (Juliet) and Micah Brooks (Tybalt), are both seniors at Rockwall-Heath High School where they are active in the drama department. When asked if she finds it uncomfortable kissing another man in front of her boyfriend, Kenzie laughs and says, “It’s not as strange as when I had to kiss his brother in a play last summer!”

Both Micah and Kenzie are veterans of the RCP stage, appearing together in Godspell last season. Micah was also in the cast of Forever Plaid with Cam Golin (Sampson) and Michael Logue (Mercutio).

Twenty-nine-year-old Brandon Whitlock is new to the RCP stage. He originally sought the role of Mercutio, but when he read the part of Romeo, Director Golin could not imagine him as anyone other than the star-crossed lover.

Doug Luke (Capulet) was last seen on the RCP stage in To Kill A Mockingbird, as was Rachel Granville (Nurse). Betsy Cooley (Lady Montague) and daughter Vanessa (Page) were in Best Christmas Pageant Ever with Anne-Marie Thacker (Balthazar) who was acting Stage Manager for the December production. Rounding out the cast are: Rob Richard (Friar John), Phil Alford (Escalus), Caleb McCabe (Benvolio), Emily Miller (Chorus), DJ Sommers (Watchman), Vance (Friar Laurence), Chris (Watchman), Tommy Redfearn (Watchman), Shay Tapia (Dierdre), Avery Mahan (Sirrah), and Leah Davis (Sirrah). Also vital to the production are Assistant Laura Blenk and Joetta Currie, whose beautiful set will transport the audience back to the time of Romeo and Juliet.

Romeo & Juliet offers something for everyone–love, swordfights, and iambic pentameter!
