American Legion Post 117 to hold Young Leadership Symposium Sept. 24

(ROCKWALL, TX — Aug. 12, 2016) Rockwall’s American Legion, Terry Fisher Post 117, has announced it will hold its second free Young Leadership Symposium in collaboration with Patriot PAWS on Sept. 24.

The goal of the free symposium is to bring together veterans and public, private or home schooled high school sophomores and juniors to demystify the concepts of leadership and explain how successful leaders develop themselves and others. Through humor, insight and experience, the military veterans of Post 117 will describe skills, stages of successful leadership and how to become an influential, respected and thriving principled leader. The symposium will also highlight the exceptional work being done by Patriot PAWS to train and provide service dogs of the highest quality at no cost to disabled American veterans and others with mobile disabilities and PTSD.

The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness and community service. It is the nation’s largest wartime veteran’s service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsoring of a number of programs to aid our community’s youth. The Terry Fisher Post 117, is honored to serve Rockwall County and this event highlights its commitment to assisting in the growth of our next generation of leaders by allowing veterans to share their experiences and insights. Young men and women will learn that leadership is not a matter of a certain position or title, but is the ability to build, motivate and inspire individuals and teams to greatness. They will teach the skills needed to be successful in multiple roles.

Terry Fisher Post 117 is a proud partner of Patriot PAWS, a nationally recognized organization also dedicated to improving our community by bringing together people and dogs to assist a range of veterans and others with physical and emotional injuries. They will explain the discipline, dedication and leadership required to train service dogs.

This free event will be held from 8:00 AM until 2:30 PM, Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Patriot PAWS facility in Rockwall, 254 Ranch Trail. Attendance is at no cost for students. Refreshments and lunch will be provided by American Legion members. High school age sophomores and juniors interested in attending can contact their school councilors, symposium coordinator, Mark Kipphut, at (214) 771-3136, or they can register directly by downloading an attendance form on the Terry Fisher American Legion Post 117 website — legionpost117.org/index.html — and mail it to PO Box 821, Rockwall, TX 75087 or email rockwallpost117@gmail.com by Sept. 17.
