(MCLENDON-CHISHOLM, TX — Jan. 31, 2017) McLendon-Chisholm [M-C] City Councilman Robert Steinhagen has announced that during the February 14 regular city council meeting, he will nominate Adrienne Balkum to fill the seat left vacant by the untimely death of Councilman Jerry Klutts, who was killed in a motor vehicle accident on the 21st.
Mrs. Balkum was one of the organizers of last May’s successful tax-rollback ballot initiative and campaigned to help elect the city’s new mayor and the two newest members on the city council, including Steinhagen. Klutts, a fourth-generation resident in M-C who was the only member of the city council to sign the petition that got the tax rollback measure placed on the ballot, was an outspoken supporter of the group that Balkum helped organize.
“I think Adrienne is the perfect fit to fulfill Jerry’s unexpired term,” said Steinhagen. “She carries his belief that corrals were meant for cattle and government, not people; that government should, at every level, be limited,” he added.
Though she resides inside the Sonoma Verde [SV] planned development, which violates the city’s 1.5-acre minimum per home-site ordinance, she says that she is committed to preventing any future high-density housing developments that may try and violate it.
“I love living in Sonoma Verde, which is a development that invites diversity and makes living here more affordable for all,” says Balkum. “However” she says, “one high-density development is enough.” Balkum adds “What will differentiate M-C from neighboring cities is protecting our wide-open spaces and more rural lifestyle, that makes M-C a uniquely desirable place to live.”
If approved by the council, Balkum says that she plans to run in May to keep the seat.
