(ROCKWALL, TX — Feb. 28, 2017) When he was a young boy growing up in Arkansas, WWII Army veteran Sgt. Nick Nichols was asked what he wanted to do when he grew up. His answer was, “Live to be 100!” Sgt. Nick, now of Plano, Texas, will have done just that on March 20th when he uses his Centennial Celebration to help a charitable cause that is near and dear to his heart.
Patriot PAWS Service Dogs is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit based in Rockwall, Texas that trains service dogs for disabled veterans at no cost to the veteran. Sgt. Nick met the founder of Patriot PAWS, Lori Stevens, last year shortly before his 99th birthday and was so impressed with the organization that he asked for donations to Patriot PAWS instead of gifts for himself. “My dad knew then that he wanted to use his 100th birthday to raise money for Patriot PAWS,” said Nick’s daughter, Cheryl. “He loves this country, he loves dogs and he is determined to help his fellow veterans who are waiting for a Patriot PAWS service dog.”
Currently, there are over 100 veterans waiting for a Patriot PAWS service dog. “On average, it takes 2 years and costs $34,000 to train a fully-certified service dog,” said Ms. Stevens. “We could not do what we do without the help of our supporters like Sgt. Nick. He is a true patriot and perfect example of why his generation is called The Greatest Generation.”
Sgt. Nick’s 100th birthday bash is on March 18th at the Marriott at Legacy in Plano. The only gifts on his wish list are donations to Patriot PAWS. For more information on helping Sgt. Nick celebrate his 100th birthday and supporting Patriot PAWS, please call 972-772-3282. Tax-deductible donations can also be made through Sgt. Nick’s GoFundMe page at: https://www.gofundme.com/sgtnick100.
