New STAR Transit fare structure launches Nov. 1

(ROCKWALL, TX — October 30, 2017) On August 15, 2017, the STAR Transit Board of Directors approved a fare restructure for all STAR Transit service areas.  Part of the restructure includes discounted or free fares for qualified seniors 60 plus, veterans and persons with disabilities.  The fare changes go into effect on November 1, 2017 and is meant to help simplify the fare structure for riders and employees.

Below is a summary of the On-Demand fare restructure which is based on distance banding.  Distance banding calculates the trip fare based on direct travel distance from origin to destination and is trip based.  It does not include intercept pickups or drop-offs and measures distance based on fastest, most efficient street routing.

The Board voted to keep the $1.00 fare for the Balch Springs Midtown Express, Seagoville Express and the Hutchins Shuttle.  However, they did vote to raise the fare for the Kaufman Trolley from 25 cents to $1.00.  The Board also voted to offer a free fare for qualified elderly, veterans and persons with disabilities on all of these fixed routes.

To receive the discounted or free fares, riders must complete an Eligibility Form.  Forms can be accessed by calling 877-631-5278 or via www.STARtransit.org.  Assessments can be scheduled, Monday – Friday, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm.  If approved, a photo will be taken for the STAR Transit Reduced Fare ID pass.  If requested, STAR Transit will provide free transportation to the assessment appointment.

There is a $2.00 processing fee.  The Reduced Fare ID pass must be presented to the driver each time a rider boards any STAR Transit vehicle.
