Primary Election Results

(ROCKWALL, TX — March 7, 2018) The results from the Republican and Democratic primary elections are in, with the majority of Rockwall voters supporting Republican incumbents. A total of 10,078 ballots were cast out of 60,000 registered voters in the Republican primary, while 2,481 total ballots were cast out of 60,400 registered voters in the Democratic primary.

Republican Primary

David Peek won the County Treasurer race with 62.26 percent of the vote over Jeff Davidson. Lee Gilbert came out on top against opponent Johnny Myers in the County Commissioner Precinct 2 race with 62.11 percent of the vote, while David Magness won the majority of the vote (61.64 percent) over John Stacy for County Commissioner Precinct 4.

Several ran unopposed in their respective offices: Kenda Culpepper, Rockwall County Criminal District Attorney; David Sweet, County Judge; Lea Carlson, District Clerk; Shelli Miller; County Clerk; Jack James; Justice of the Peace Precinct 1; and Laverne Kennimer, County Chairman.

In a tight race for Justice of the Peace Precinct 2, Cathy Penn claimed the victory with 41.9 percent of the vote over Chris Florance (34.01 percent) and Paul Pecena (24.1 percent). Mary H. Puckett earned 56.05 percent of the vote against Pete Flores (43.95 percent) in the Precinct 1C Chairman race, while Brandon Day won the majority vote (64.09 percent) over Mamie Jenkins for Precinct 4A Chairman.

At the state level, incumbent Bob Hall won the race for State Senator over Cindy Burkett with 60.34 percent of the vote. Greg Abbott won the race for Governor over opponents Barbara Krueger and SECEDE Kilgore with 90.85 percent of the vote. Dan Patrick claimed 71.92 percent of the vote over opponent Scott Milder (28.08 percent) in the race for Lieutenant Governor. Justin Holland ran unopposed for State Representative District 33.

Ted Cruz earned the majority 85.54 percent of the vote in the race for United States Senator, while John Ratcliffe claimed the victory over John Cooper for U.S. Representative District 4 with 89.44 percent of the vote.

Democratic Primary

Beto O’Rourke won the race for U.S. Senator with 63.42 percent of the vote over opponents Sema Hernandez (20.72 percent) and Edward Kimbrough (15.86 percent), while Catherine Krantz took the vast majority of the votes (73.5 percent) over opponent Lander Bethel. In the state level races, Mike Collier claimed the majority 58.96 percent of the vote over opponent Michael Cooper for Lieutenant Governor.

Lupe Valdez won the majority 54.96 percent of the vote in the race for County Governor, the only contested county race in the Democratic primary. Running unopposed were: Nina Richard, County Judge; Karan Sproul, District Clerk; Erika Ledferd; County Comissioner Precinct 4; and Judith Matherne, County Chairman.
