(ROWLETT, TX — March 2, 2018) The Rowlett Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors met on Feb. 26 in a special meeting called by the Chair, Whitney Laning. The intent and outcome of the meeting was to discuss and pass a resolution in support of continued funding for the IH-30 expansion project.
A funding gap on the IH-635 East project has caused the Regional Transportation Committee (RTC) and the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) to find alternatives to make up the shortfall. The gap is caused by the Texas Transportation Committee’s (TTC) lack of support for managed toll lanes which has resulted in a proposal to use the IH-30 project funds as collateral. This proposal is very concerning as it jeopardizes the IH-30 project.
The IH-30 project is of extreme importance to the business community for several reasons that are detailed in the resolution. Some of those reasons include:
- The IH-30 project will significantly improve public safety conditions along the IH-30 corridor between Garland and Rockwall.
- Failure to complete the IH-30 project will be detrimental to the economic growth of the region including the $1.0 Billion Bayside development. The Bayside development will be instrumental in pouring millions of dollars into the region along with thousands of employment opportunities.
- The mobility in the area is severely lacking and this project is critical to improving that.
The Board of Directors passed the resolution unanimously. The resolution and an introductory letter were sent to Mayor Franke, Chair of the RTC, Michael Morris, Director of Transportation, NCTCOG and to J. Bruce Bugg, Jr., Chairman, TTC.
