Meals on Wheels celebrates Older Americans

(ROCKWALL, TX – May 14, 2018) Meals on Wheels honored seniors, programs and volunteers serving the community during the Older Americans Day celebration at the Rockwall County Library on May 10.

Older Americans Month was established in 1963 and is celebrated nationwide during the month of May each year. MOWSS Executive Director Margie VerHagen said for the past 15 years, Meals on Wheels of Rockwall County has been proud to participate in the tradition honoring senior citizens.

VerHagen said the theme for this year’s celebration – “Engage at Every Age” – emphasizes the idea that one is never too old to make a difference in the community.

“More than ever, seniors are working longer and engaging in their communities,” VerHagen said. “They are taking charge, striving for wellness, focusing on independence and advocating for themselves and others. There are so many senior volunteers in Rockwall County, and as the director for Meals on Wheels, I see this every day.”

Rockwall Mayor Jim Pruitt read a proclamation recognizing May 2018 as Older Americans Month in the City of Rockwall, encouraging every resident to take time during the month to celebrate seniors and the vital roles they play in the community.
