Commissioners Court Adopts FY 2019 Rockwall County Budget

Press Release: Commissioners Court Adopts Rockwall County Budget

(ROCKWALL, TX — September 27, 2018) The Rockwall County Commissioners Court adopted the Fiscal Year 2019 County Budget during its regular meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 25.

Commissioner David Magness asked the court to support adding a sergeant to the Sheriff’s Office personnel, for a total cost of $88,817.

“County Judge David Sweet had originally left that position out of the budget, which I initially supported,” Magness said. “I had a conversation with Chief Deputy David Goelden after our meeting last week, and he convinced me that that is a needed position. I think what really swayed my change of position was the fact of the safety of the officers that he would be working with.

“For the first time, it looks like with this budget we’re going to fully staff both the Sheriff’s Office and the jail,” Magness added. “We’ve had somewhat of a contentious budget session, and I believe it has led to a greater understanding for each of us as to how those two entities work, and how we should interact with that.”

Sweet made a motion to include the following revisions to the budget:

-Increase interest earnings $50,000
-increase revenue for dispatch services $10,000
-Increase expenditures $25,000 to central purchasing for the new courthouse landscaping materials, to be utilized by Todd Williams of the Rockwall County Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Services Office
-Increase a corrective measure of $2,224 for JP III personnel
-Increase a corrective measure of $796 for District Attorney personnel
-Decrease the County’s portion of the budget under ESC Emergency Management of $400
-Add a sergeant to the Sheriff’s Office staff for a cost of $88,817
-Amend the budget to reflect two transfers of $250,000 for future maintenance agreement expenses and $169,800 for future maintenance and repairs

Sweet’s motion passed unanimously. Sweet then made a motion to adopt the FY 2019 County budget, which also passed unanimously.

“I’m extremely proud of the budget process this year,” Sweet said. “I’m proud of the elected officials and department heads who are so dedicated to ensuring that services are provided as they should be to the citizens of Rockwall County. I’m proud of what they do on a day-to-day basis, not just during budget time. This is something we work on all year long. We’re always thinking about what’s in the best interests of our communities, and we’ve got a good fiscal discipline that’s in place.”
