(ROCKWALL, TX — February 11, 2019) On Friday, Feb. 8, Rep. John Ratcliffe held a meeting with Collin County Sheriff Jim Skinner and Rockwall County Sheriff Harold Eavenson in Washington, D.C. The two sheriffs from Texas’ 4th District work together on the North Texas Sheriffs Criminal Interdiction Unit, which is a multi-agency initiative that intercepts drugs and other contraband trafficked along smuggling routes throughout the region. They will also be attending the 2019 National Sheriffs’ Association Winter Legislative and Technology Conference during their visit to the nation’s capital.
“It was great meeting with Sheriffs Skinner and Eavenson to hear about the great work they’re doing to protect the constituents I represent in Texas’ 4th District. I’m incredibly grateful for the sacrifices they and their deputies make on a daily basis to keep the Northeast Texas community safe, and I look forward to continuing my efforts in Congress to ensure they’re properly equipped to safely to their jobs,” Ratcliffe said.
Ratcliffe authored legislation in 2015 that aimed to restore police access to life-saving equipment after the Obama administration restricted access to the 1033 Program, which provides defense surplus equipment to state and local law enforcement. In 2017, this policy was effectively enacted by President Trump through executive order.
