Michael Conway of Rockwall Celebrates 50 Years as CPA

(ROCKWALL, TX — July 1, 2019) As a professional accountant, Michael Conway has worked with some highly important numbers over the course of his long career. But earlier this spring, Conway was honored for one particularly significant number.

During a ceremony in Austin, the State Board of Public Accountancy presented Conway with a certificate recognizing his 50 years of licensure as a certified public accountant.

Conway and his son, Neil, along with Coleen Smith, serve as the managing partners for Conway Company CPAs, a firm which has assisted businesses in Rockwall and Hunt counties for the last 25 years. They started the firm with an office in Greenville (8910 Wesley St # D) and in 2006 opened a small office in Rockwall located at 603 S Goliad St.

“The town just seemed to fit us,” Conway said. “It’s very easy to get to know people here.”

Working with many businesses in Rockwall and Hunt counties, Conway Company CPAs helps these businesses, particularly startups and small service companies, become aware of the potential pitfalls that could cause problems if left unchecked. Two areas in particular, Conway said, have been the downfall of many startups: self-employment tax and sales tax.

“One thing we see frequently for startup service businesses is that when they start out, they don’t take into account all of the regulations that they have to comply with,” Conway said. “There are tax aspects that a lot of them might not think about. For example, if they provide a taxable service – which many of them do – then they have to register and collect sales tax. If they don’t do that, within a year or so they find themselves in trouble.”

In his 50 years as a certified public accountant, Conway said the thing he most enjoys about his job is getting to know the people he serves.

“The thing I enjoy the most about being a CPA is the relationships that I get to build with my clients,” Conway said. “It’s one of those functions that makes you feel useful, for sure.”

Outside of business hours, Conway and his wife Jean love to travel the world. They’ve explored 20 countries in the past 20 years, many of them through their favorite mode of travel: a river cruise. Conway said there’s no better way to see the wonders of the world, especially ancient European civilizations.

“Floating along on a nice river boat, watching castles go by that were built many years ago, I find that very enjoyable,” he said.

Conway said they’re looking forward to a couple of planned trips overseas this year: one to Germany with their two grandchildren, and another to New Zealand and Australia in the late fall.

Locally, you can find Conway and Jean frequenting their favorite eating spots such as The Londoner and Luigi’s Italian Café. An avid reader, Conway also enjoys getting lost in the latest works from today’s popular novelists.

Conway also likes to stay involved in the Rockwall community. He currently serves as treasurer for the Rockwall Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. He’s a longtime member of the Rockwall Rotary and serves as the treasurer for the Rotary Foundation.

Additionally, Conway serves on the board of the Rockwall Housing Development Corporation. He became involved with the housing authority through the recommendation of a friend who has served within the corporation for many years.

“Volunteering for the Housing Development Corporation is a great way for me to spend my time,” he said.
