Rockwall County Commissioners Court recognizes Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month 2022

ROCKWALL, TX – April 12, 2022 — The Rockwall County Commissioners Court today approved a proclamation recognizing April 2022 as Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month in Rockwall County.

Representatives with the Children’s Advocacy Center for Rockwall County (CACRC), Lone Star CASA, and the Rainbow Room joined the court as Rockwall County Judge David Sweet read out the proclamation.

Throughout the month, you will likely notice a lot of buildings around the county shining blue lights in the evening, as well as many businesses offering special promotions to help support the CACRC and its mission.

“There’s two reasons why we do that,” Sweet said. “One is that if there’s someone who drives throughout our community who does bad things, that they’re very aware that that is not okay here in Rockwall County and there’s a group of folks who are going to hold them accountable. Also for those who are going through child abuse, kids who are going by the courthouse or city hall or seeing the posters in restaurants and retail stores that say what this is about, that there is someone who they can tell and who will listen to them. I want to thank our community for being all in and I encourage everyone in Rockwall County to go blue this month.”

CACRC President and CEO Patricia Mejia said the CACRC has served more and more children each year since it opened its doors four years ago – indicating that there is a clear need in the community for its services.

“Just last year, we saw a 72 percent increase in the number of children and families that walked through our doors,” Mejia said. “That alone says that there is a place for children to come, there is a need, and we’re stepping up to meet that need. A month full of awareness is really about standing in that gap and letting children know who are suffering in silence that there is a place for them; there’s somebody they can talk to.

“Our goal is to make sure we reach every child who needs us, offer every service recommended for them, and make sure every effort is made to provide the highest quality of service.”

The community is invited to join Lone Star CASA, the Children’s Advocacy Center for Rockwall County, and other county organizations at the Historic Rockwall County Courthouse lawn to recognize Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month on Thursday, April 14 at 6 p.m.
