Rockwall couple shares the spirit of Christmas with inspiring light display

Rockwall, TX (December 1, 2023) – UPDATE December 19, 2023: Did you hear the news? The Hughes’ will compete in the 2024 Great Christmas Light Fight on ABC!

You can also catch the story about their inspiring light display this Friday night at 10:00pm on NBC 5.

Since 2019, David and Brenda Hughes have lit up The Shores with a fantastic and awe-inspiring display featuring Christmas scenes, joyful surprises, and more lights than the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree.

The dazzling display could be right out of a Hallmark movie but the story behind the story makes this light show extra meaningful.David began stringing lights to cheer Brenda after her 29-year-old son, Nathaniel, passed away in 2019. The lights served as a reminder to stay in the light during that difficult period and grew into what is now a cherished Christmas tradition with families of all ages strolling along Plummer Drive.

Brenda describes her beloved Nathaniel as a kind person who had it in his heart to give and do for others. His servant heart compelled Brenda to remember and honor him by encouraging those who visit to give to others. Creating an opportunity to donate onsite, they began requesting donations for local charities and last year collected $6200 for Meals on Wheels Senior Services of Rockwall County! The goal this year – $10,000!

Through their devotion and hundreds of hours of work, the display has succeeded in bringing light to their lives and thousands of others.

Each year, David and Brenda include new scenes to keep the display delighting their audience. They began in September planning for a grand display which now includes over 100,000 lights, a hand-painted mural, and even a Gingerbread house! You may even find David and Brenda right there passing out candy canes and sharing the Christmas spirit with those taking in the mesmerizing show. The Hughes’ invite the community to “stay in the light” visiting the display at 1655 Plummer Drive in The Shores with a sense of Christmas spirit and joyful service. The lights come on at dark each evening until 10:00pm beginning December 1 and continue through Christmas. A donation box is available onsite, and envelopes are provided for monetary donations with checks made out to Meals on Wheels. You may also donate non-skid socks, blankets, pantry foods.
