Rockwall, TX (March 4, 2024) – Depression is an actual and treatable medical condition, not a normal part of aging. However, older adults are at an increased risk of experiencing depression. Everyone needs social connections to survive and thrive. But as people age, they often find themselves spending more time alone. Studies show that loneliness and social isolation are associated with higher rates of depression.
Noticing signs of depression in a loved one is unsettling. Knowing that their lifestyle and friend groups have changed gives them a feeling of no control and uncertainty. There are resources available. Having the knowledge and resources before facing these situations is helpful and ensures confidence during conversations. Meals on Wheels Senior Services of Rockwall County (MOWSS) partners with the North Central Texas Area Agency on Aging to provide caregiver support for caregivers and seniors. Preparation for these situations can relieve anxiety as no one is ever ready.
The PEARLS program may be for you. (Program to Encourage Active Rewarding Lives for Seniors) A PEARLS counselor will provide one-on-one assistance for you to set personal goals, find the pathway that is right for you and assist you every step of the way. For more information, call Doni Green at 817-695-9193 or email her at: dgreen@nctcog.org for confidential information.
A sense of purpose goes a long way for someone in a new living arrangement who may feel forced to make friends where lifelong friends once were. As a caregiver, you can only do so much for someone facing this dilemma. Contacting MOWSS is the first step towards seeking help and planning for the caregiver’s needs and those of the person(s) they care for in all instances; preserving independence, dignity, and safety for our seniors and disabled is our number one goal.
