Rockwall, TX (March 4, 2024) – Rockwall’s FIRST Lego League robotics team, Brick Nerds, just completed their second season advancing to the regional competition for the second year in a row!
The team of 5th and 7th grade students from Rockwall includes Isaac Morales, Ben Sterling, Jason Denhartog, Matthew Denhartog, and Tucker Dugdale. Led by Coach Valerie Denhartog the team works together to design and solve problems in preparation for the competition, where they compete in 4 different components – robot game, innovation project, robot design, and core values.
Each component provides challenges to overcome. The robot game is always a favorite competition, but the innovation project provides an even greater test. In this component the team is provided a question and problem to solve with this year’s challenge being how to engage others to become interested in your hobbies if they don’t think they would enjoy it. The team decided on a board game hobby and dressing in characters developed a skit to showcase how they would attack the problem.
The FIRST Lego League includes over 400 teams in our region and just over 100 are selected to advance to regionals with just a handful of those advancing to the state competition.
In addition to the competition the team includes a variety of fun activities into their season. Brick Nerds recently attended several field trips to the Perot Museum and Lakepointe Church where they learn how the arts engage people and to develop ideas for the innovation project competition itself. They also took time to close out their successful season with a celebratory party!
