Rockwall, TX (September 11, 2024) – Do you have a child that enjoys being in the kitchen and creating recipes? Or maybe you want to spark an interest in nutrition and food-related activities? If so, Rockwall County 4-H is hosting a Foods & Nutrition learning event on September 21, 2024, from 9 am-noon at the Rockwall County Extension office. The address is 915 Whitmore Dr, Ste. B, Rockwall, TX 75087.
Join us for a fun-filled morning learning about food and nutrition. This event will include a great team-building experience with the 4-H Food Challenge. This is similar to Iron Chef, except youth work in teams of 3-4. They are supplied with certain kitchen utensils, receive a list of ingredients, and have 40 minutes to create a dish. The teams then present their dish to judges and are scored on preparation, serving size, food safety concerns, nutritional value, and cost. This is a wonderful exercise in critical thinking and public speaking for youth.
This event is open to all youth residing in Rockwall County who are enrolled in Rockwall County 4-H. Not a member yet? No problem! Join now at https://v2.4honline.com. The cost is $25 per child/ per year for youth ages 8 and in 3rd grade through 12th grade. Cost increases to $30 after October 31.
You might be wondering what is 4-H? 4‑H is America’s largest youth development organization—empowering nearly six million young people with the skills to lead for a lifetime. Many people think 4-H is only for those that have livestock and, as you can see, that is not true! There are also many opportunities, in addition to Foods & Nutrition, such as; Fashion and Interior Design, Photography, Shooting Sports, and much more!
Registration deadline is this Friday, September 13. Register by joining 4-H and by calling 972-204-7660 or emailing rockwall@ag.tamu.edu to confirm your place. 4-H is fun for the whole family. Parents will stay for the project training to understand the process and work with their youth at home. Please use the included contact phone number or email for any questions.
