Rockwall, TX (October 23, 2024) – Damon Jackson dreamed of being a professional athlete from the time he was very young. For him, the only question was whether to pursue pitching in the Major League or his passion for the UFC.
Choosing to follow his heart to the UFC surely has been the right path! The Rockwall resident has successfully competed in the Ultimate Fighting Championship for 11 years, with an impressive record of 23-7-1.
Damon grew up in Durant, Oklahoma, where his uncle introduced him to Mixed Martial Arts. He became fascinated by the sport. As a fan, and without other martial arts opportunities, Damon began wrestling in 7th grade, continued through college, and turned professional shortly after graduation.
As his career advanced, he learned that like other sports, MMA involves individual hard work and discipline with conditioning, focus, strategy, and good coaching.
Fast forward to today, coming off a tough fight in August, Damon faces his next main event on November 16 at Madison Square Garden in New York. He will face Jim Miller, a highly accomplished competitor – and that has Damon deep into training camp.
“Training is grueling – it is a lifestyle,” says Damon. He trains several hours each day, mixing sparring, grappling, kickboxing, strength and conditioning, and jiu jitsu – amongst other disciplines and priorities.
Preparing for the big fight involves mental, physical, and emotional training. Lasting 8-10 weeks, camp is all about strengthening the body both inside and outside. In addition to the physical and mental training, Damon will watch film of his opponent to craft the best attack strategy.
With no “off-season”, MMA fighters might have 3 to 4 fights a year separated by recovery and intense training. The sport is hard on the body, but these dedicated athletes are well conditioned and disciplined professionals whose lifestyles focus on staying fit.
While some may believe that MMA fighters are aggressive, this girl-dad of four daughters will tell you different. Self-control and discipline are critical to the sport and great lessons for life.
Asked if he considers his future in the sport, Damon is quick to say, “I love it so much! I will know when the time is right to step away. I am 36 years old so getting to that age where recovery is harder. But as long as I can safely compete at a high level I will do so.”
Using his background and experience to train and coach local athletes, Damon opened Fortis MMA 18 months ago. Located inside Rockwall’s 24 HR Fitness, Damon works with a variety of athletes including several pursuing a professional MMA career.
