Rockwall, TX (January 7, 2025) – Melba Jeffus announced today she will run for the Rockwall City Council, Place 3. Melba Jeffus, a native Texan, and her husband Stan, moved to Rockwall in 2004. Melba retired from the Dallas County Community College, having worked in Financial Aid, Marketing and Communications, and Information Technology. Melba has been a local activist and volunteer for two decades.
Jeffus discovered a passion for city government as an active citizen. She believes that growth in a city is a good sign of progress and a healthy future, but it must be controlled and planned growth. Stating, “The infrastructure of the city needs growth that corresponds with business and housing growth. Over the last few decades, I have become more and more concerned with the uncontrolled growth and density occurring in Rockwall. I see housing developments with hundreds of homes on small lots in developments that feed onto two lane streets causing traffic nightmares. “
Jeffus stated, ‘I am running for City Council to be a strong voice for the citizens of Rockwall. As a member of the City Council, and a citizen experiencing the by-products of over development in Rockwall, I will focus on the urgency of the City Council to control development and make sure the Comprehensive Plan will allow growth but will give the citizens the quality of life that they deserve.”
Jeffus continued, “Within a couple of months after moving to Rockwall, I learned of a high-density housing development planned on our south property line. After just leaving Garland where we had experienced the effects of rapid growth and high-density apartments, I was concerned. After attending Rockwall City Council meetings, I realized I needed to become involved. I began to see growth patterns that concerned me as I regularly attended City Council and Planning and Zoning meetings.”
She graduated from the Rockwall Citizens Academy in 2005 and served on the Architectural Review Board from 2006-2012 and on the Rockwall Appraisal Review Board from 2014-2018.
An active member of the Rockwall Republican party since 2008, she held several offices in the Republican Women’s Club including the office of Vice President from 2011-2014 and as President from 2014-2018.
Melba received the TFRW “Tribute to Women” award, and in 2017 received the “Rockwall County GOP Chairman” award. In 2019 she was awarded the “RCRW Woman of Influence” award.
In 2024, Congressman Patrick Fallon, awarded Melba the “United States Congressional Patriot” award for her dedication and service to our community.
Jeffus commented on her service and recognition, “I am and have been a member of many organizations in Rockwall. I am very proud of all the active volunteers that serve the many organizations and nonprofits in Rockwall. There is a great sense of community pride and that is what I love about Rockwall.”
