Stay in the Light: Rockwall couple’s dazzling display inspires record-setting New Year donation to Meals on Wheels

Rockwall, TX (February 5, 2025) – It’s no secret that David and Brenda Hughes have been lighting up their home in The Shores for many years with a dazzling Christmas display.  Each December, countless families gather on Plummer Drive in Rockwall to experience the grand extravaganza, and to pay tribute to their late son, Nathaniel, by giving back to others. 2024 was no exception. Visitors to the display responded by dropping off record-setting donations to Meals on Wheels Senior Services, all in the spirit of giving.

The brilliant light show began in 2019 as David’s way to brighten Brenda’s spirits following Nathaniel’s passing – and and it has since grown into a cherished tradition for the couple and the entire community.

With the generous support of a caring community, the Hughes’ kicked off the New Year by presenting a bounty of blankets, socks, food and monetary gifts from visitors totaling over $13,200 to Meals on Wheels Senior Services of Rockwall County. “That equates to more than 3,700 meals for our elderly neighbors in need,” said Margie VerHagen, MOWSS Executive Director. “We cannot overstate our gratitude to David and Brenda for their Stay in the Light Christmas display. It is unique that the Hughes’ share the joy of the beautiful interactive Christmas light display with the community and provide a vehicle for donations to Meals on Wheels. Our clients are blessed by their warm and loving spirit.”
