Rockwall, TX (March 20, 2025) – Residents of Highland Meadows Health & Rehab, located at 1870 S. John King Blvd. in Rockwall, have turned their passion for sewing into an act of service. These “senior sew-ers” recently crafted and donated handmade pillowcases, new pillows, and blankets to the Rainbow Room of Rockwall—a nonprofit that provides emergency resources for children in crisis.
When abused or neglected children must be removed from their homes for safety, they often depart with only the clothes on their backs. That’s where the Rainbow Room comes in, providing immediate assistance to children in the care of Child Protective Services. The Rainbow Room is an actual room filled with emergency supplies such as diapers, formula, hygiene items, school supplies and more – which caseworkers can access 24/7, to support children in foster care.
For the residents of Highland Meadows, learning about these children’s hardships was deeply moving. “When we heard about the Rainbow Room, we knew we could do something to provide comfort,” said Lissa Robertson, Activity Director at the award-winning skilled nursing facility. “Our residents raised money from a fall craft fair to purchase fabric and create child-friendly bedding.”
Jerry Welch, president of the Rainbow Room Board of Directors, has been dedicated to the cause for a decade. “I first learned about the Rainbow Room through a presentation to the Rockwall County Realtors group. After hearing their former leader speak about the mission, I was inspired and wanted to help,” he said.
Welch and Cindy O’Reilly, Board VP of Projects, personally accepted the donation, expressing gratitude for the seniors’ generosity. “The State of Texas requires every foster child to have a bed. If a foster family doesn’t have one available, we step in. The bedding lovingly donated by Highland Meadows will not only provide comfort but, in some cases, fulfill an essential need.”
