Honoring 50 Years of Community: The Future of the J.E.R. Chilton YMCA at Rockwall

Rockwall, TX (September 23, 2025) – For 50 years, the YMCA in Rockwall has been more than a gym. It has been the heartbeat of a growing Rockwall County – a place where babies took their first swim, young athletes found their footing on the field, and generations of families built friendships, resilience, and lasting memories.

From its humble beginnings in 1969, when local churches and civic leaders petitioned for YMCA programming, to its official charter as a full branch in 1975, Rockwall’s Y has always reflected the values and vision of the people it serves. Back then, it was just a few programs and a whole lot of heart. Today, known as the J.E.R. Chilton YMCA at Rockwall, it is a hub for health, learning, mentorship, and connection for thousands.

A Legacy of Growth

The YMCA has grown right alongside Rockwall County. Some of the key milestones include:

  • 1969 – Local churches and community groups rally to bring YMCA programs to Rockwall.
  • 1975 – The Rockwall YMCA becomes a full branch of the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas.
  • 1979 – The first capital campaign raises $50,000 to begin construction on a dedicated facility.
  • 1983 – The YMCA opens its first permanent building in Rockwall at 1210 N. Goliad Street.
  • 1988–1992 – Expansion adds a gymnasium and outdoor pool with bathhouse.
  • 1999 – A new pool cover extends seasonal swimming, thanks to support from the Chilton and Hawk families.
  • 2009 – Angel Camp launches, offering children with special needs a joyful summer experience.
  • 2012 – The Rockwall YMCA expands again and is renamed the J.E.R. Chilton YMCA at Rockwall, honoring the support of longtime community leader and donor Bob Chilton.

Each milestone represents more than new walls or square footage – it reflects a deepening commitment to serve more families and meet more needs.

“Every generation has helped shape this Y into what it is today,” said Harold Young, Executive Director of the J.E.R. Chilton YMCA at Rockwall. “We’ve grown because this community has believed in us, invested in us, and walked alongside us for five decades.”

Meeting Today’s Needs

Since the last expansion in 2012, Rockwall County’s population has doubled, yet the YMCA building has remained the same size. At the same time, membership and participation continue to climb, stretching the facility to its limits.

The Y has kept pace where it can, refreshing its ChildWatch space and revitalizing its fitness studio to reenergize group workouts. But with more families than ever seeking programs and support, the need is greater than ever.

And so, the YMCA is taking the next bold step.

A Vision for the Next 50 Years

To meet the needs of today’s Rockwall County – and prepare for the next generation – the YMCA has launched a $5.2 million capital campaign to expand and modernize its facility.

Planned improvements include:

  • A fully enclosed Aquatic Center for year-round swim lessons, lap swim, water aerobics, and lifesaving water safety programs.
  • A new Group Exercise Studio serving youth, adults, and seniors in every season.
  • Expanded parking and improved navigation for safer, easier access during busy times.
  • Upgrades to ChildWatch and family spaces, ensuring every visitor feels welcome and supported.

The campaign is already gaining momentum thanks to the generosity of community partners. Locally owned HomeBank Texas recently announced a $500,000 contribution toward the effort, a transformational investment that secures naming rights for the renovated natatorium and inspires others to give.

“Support like this underscores what makes Rockwall special,” said Harold Young. “It shows the power of local businesses and families stepping up to invest in the health and future of our community.”

More Than a Building

The Y has always been about people first. It’s where:

  • Children with special needs gain independence at Angel Camp.
  • Children and teens build skills and confidence through youth sports programs – from soccer, basketball, football, T-ball, volleyball, and the youth swim team to swim lessons and leadership opportunities.
  • Seniors stay active and social with arthritis-friendly water exercise.
  • Families from all walks of life come together with shared purpose and support.

The YMCA believes strong families create strong communities. And Rockwall’s Y has been proving that for half a century.
