Meals on Wheels Senior Services warns of impact from federal funding reductions and government shutdown

Rockwall, TX (October 27,2025) — Meals on Wheels Senior Services (MOWSS) regrets to inform the community that recent reductions in federal funding have significantly impacted the organization’s ability to provide vital services to local seniors and individuals with disabilities.

The ongoing government shutdown further jeopardizes Meals on Wheels programs through decreased federal funding, which may lead to halted meal deliveries, growing waitlists, and necessary reductions in operations. These challenges come at a time when the demand for services continues to rise among the most vulnerable members of our community.

“This funding uncertainty directly affects our ability to serve those who depend on us each day,” said Margie VerHagen, Executive Director of Meals on Wheels Senior Services. “We are already facing budget shortfalls, and with a large portion of our funding tied to government sources, the shutdown puts even more strain on our operations.”

Despite these challenges, Meals on Wheels Senior Services continues to do everything possible to meet the growing need. The generous help they receive from the community allows them to offer other important services in addition to meals, such as safety checks and social connections for older adults – ensuring their overall well-being even as demand for basic services increases.

“We maximize every dollar, no matter where it comes from, to feed as many people as possible,” added VerHagen. “And through the help of this generous community, we have never had a waiting list.”

MOWSS is currently seeking alternative sources of support, including community partnerships and monetary donations, to help sustain services during this critical time. However, the long-term effects of a prolonged shutdown are severe. Cuts and delayed funding to programs such as Medicaid will only increase food insecurity among seniors, leading to higher demand for Meals on Wheels services at a time when resources are diminishing.

“We are calling on our community to stand with us,” said VerHagen. “Every contribution, no matter the size, helps ensure no senior is left hungry or forgotten.”
