Update: Rockwall’s Chris Fowler sees Eagle Scout project takes flight

Rockwall, TX (October 29, 2025) – What began over a year ago as an Eagle Scout project has evolved into a community-wide conservation effort, with newly constructed bee hotels now installed at seven Rockwall area parks.

Chris Fowler, constructed each of the bee hotel to exact specifications.

Scout Chris Fowler spent extensive time researching requirements, installation specifications, and materials to construct bee hotels designed as safe nesting sites for bees. With construction finally complete, Chris led area boy scouts in the hotel installation at Harry Myers, Shores Park, Emerald Bay, Stone Creek, Breezy Hill, Hickory Ridge, and Pettinger Parks. The hands-on project not only advanced Chris’ Eagle rank but also allowed participating scouts to earn their Conservation Badge.

Chris provided instruction on exact placement, including the requirement to face the hotels to the south and within exact distance to a water source.

While the bee hotel structures are installed, the canes will be inserted in February as the adult bees begin to lay eggs. To ensure long term success, Chris trained the Rockwall Butterfly Brigade, a volunteer group of local residents who preserve pollination efforts by managing butterfly gardens and meadows, on future needs. Specifically, the group will oversee the yearly collection of the canes prior to the first freeze and their replacement each spring.

A sign accompanies each bee hotel that provides information as to the purpose.

These bees, who are not a threat to stinging, have an important role in pollination of North Texas wildflowers and gardens. Feel free to observe them from a distance as they go about their important work maintaining a healthy ecosystem.
