J.E.R. Chilton YMCA Veterans Day Ceremony: Weaving faith, gratitude, and honor into action

J.E.R. Chilton YMCA Veterans Day Ceremony: Weaving faith, gratitude, and honor into action

Rockwall, TX (November 18, 2025) – On Tuesday, November 11, J.E.R. Chilton YMCA at Rockwall staff, friends, and community members gathered in a poignant tribute reflecting on and honoring Veterans for their profound commitment to our nation. The annual event, which blends faithful prayer, unwavering patriotism, and deep appreciation, serves to remind all in attendance of the enduring costs of freedom.

The event began with a memorable flag folding ceremony. Those assembled found themselves captivated as each of the thirteen folds were explained – symbolizing life, eternal life, honor, trust in God, and tribute to family and country – in a moving reminder of sacrifice.

Keynote speaker, Chris Dorward, US Marine Corps Veteran and co-founder of the Rockwall based, non-profit Texas Valor Project, delivered a powerful message of resilience. Highlighting the beginnings of Veterans Day, Dorward spoke of the countless Veterans who returned home, then, and now, carrying scars, many of which are unseen.

Saying, “Honoring Veterans requires more than words, it requires action,” Dorward founded Texas Valor Project to help Veterans who struggle with life altering conditions – serious challenges that affect their families and futures.

To help meet the challenges, and in honor of their service, Texas Valor Project was formed to bridge the gap in providing care for Veterans suffering with Traumatic Brain Injuries. Providing access to treatment at no cost, Texas Valor Project has seen remarkable results – improved sleep, decreased depression, reduced anxiety, improved cognitive function and memory – which is creating positive change rebuilding lives and restoring families.

Attendees felt the weight of their burden, as they heard Matt’s story, in his own words. A Veteran and First Responder, Matt suffered many of the debilitating effects of his experiences. Thankfully, Matt was introduced to Texas Valor Project and after successful treatment says, “For years, I was surviving but Texas Valor Project has me living again.”

Dorward closed with a challenge that we might choose to honor Veterans not in words only. Inspiring all to advance our gratitude towards standing with and supporting those whose mission serves Veterans.

In a ceremony of particular significance, the Rockwall YMCA delivered a message of grateful appreciation to Veterans and their families saying – you are seen, valued, and never forgotten – and offered inspiration to all to find our own ways to serve and honor the legacy of our Veterans.
