The Man Behind the Mail Route: Community Invited to Send Encouragement to Rockwall Mail Carrier

The Man Behind the Mail Route: Community Invited to Send Encouragement to Rockwall Mail Carrier

ROCKWALL, TX (March 31, 2026) — When Rockwall resident and United States Postal Service mail carrier Elizabeth reached out to Blue Ribbon News, it was with a simple but heartfelt goal: to shine a light on someone she calls “an extraordinary individual.” Having met Monty Norvell about 10 years ago through their work—and now calling him her best friend—Elizabeth submitted her story to share Monty’s life, service, and the many relationships he has built over the years, while also inviting the community to offer encouragement and support during a difficult time.

After more than 33 years serving Rockwall as a mail carrier, Monty may be more than just a familiar face—he may be your mailman, a friend, or someone who has brightened your day along his route. Elizabeth describes him as someone who consistently goes above and beyond for others. Over the years, she said he has quietly provided Christmas gifts to families in Rockwall, helped with groceries, meals, and school clothes, and stepped in whenever someone was in need.

Whether it’s making sure coworkers and residents have something cold to drink during the hottest summer days, or bringing in coffee, hot chocolate, and other comforts during the winter months, Monty has made it a priority to take care of those around him—both on his route and within the post office. “Anytime anybody is in need, he is there for them,” she said.

Recently, Monty had to step away from his route due to serious health challenges, including a battle with cancer, and his absence has been deeply felt across the community. Elizabeth said it was in that moment that the true extent of his impact became clear. The residents and friends he saw each day began asking about him, missing him, and expressing concern for his well-being.

As a longtime city carrier serving both businesses and residential neighborhoods, Monty built countless relationships—far too many to reach individually. Elizabeth said that is why she turned to Blue Ribbon News: to help share his story with the entire community and invite those who know and love him to surround him with encouragement and support.

Read below for Elizabeth’s heartfelt letter about Monty’s life and the lasting impact he has made on the Rockwall community, along with ways to share your encouragement and well wishes.

Hey Rockwall!

I love this city, my community, and the people… but there is one individual that I love and admire immensely! Many of you know him and love him, and you have probably missed seeing him lately.

Monty Gene Norvell was born in Garland, TX on September 24, 1959. He is one of three children, born to proud parents, James and Eva.

He joined the United States Air Force in 1979, and his parents were super proud. Monty served in the Airlift Air Force Command and was stationed in San Antonio, TX. He was able to see the world while serving our beautiful country. He spent time in Asia, Europe, Africa, and South America, and of course, most of the states in the U.S. He once told me his favorite times were spent in Europe.

He concluded his time in the Air Force in September of 2004, after more than 24 years of service. God bless him. He retired with full military honors.

Some of his final years in the Air Force were in the Reserves. When his dad became ill, he wanted to be home with his mom and family to help take care of his ailing father. That’s just the kind of sweet person he is!

Monty is also a loving father of two children, a son and a daughter, Lee and Sue.

After retiring from the Air Force, he continued his service by working for the United States Postal Service, following in his father’s footsteps as a proud mail carrier. Monty started in the Dallas office in November of 1993 and came to the Rockwall office in 1996. Thirty-three years later, he is still serving our beautiful city.

Many of you know Monty and have developed friendships with him throughout the years. Substitute mail carriers have shared that many people have been asking about him and are concerned.

Monty has had some medical issues, and it has not been easy on him, but he is a fighter. He has fought with a strong heart and with the strength of God. He is not out of the woods, but he is doing better. He misses his friends and residents tremendously.

Throughout the years, Monty has developed special relationships with his residents. Some of them, he has even gone as far as to help with delicate needs. He has helped the elderly. He has provided Christmas for families. He has fed the hungry. He has also played a huge part in caring for animals in the community, especially along his route.
