Long distance caregiving resources from Rockwall Meals on Wheels

Rockwall, TX (September 29, 2023) – What do you do as a caregiver when a loved one needs something and you do not live nearby? Long distance caregiving is a challenge whether you are an hour away or a flight out. Preparedness and planning can alleviate stress when situations arise unexpectedly. Often, these unexpected scenarios cause a hiccup in everyone’s schedule, leaving your loved one feeling vulnerable and unnecessarily guilty. For the caregiver, anxious feelings and frustration are often present. Ultimately, everyone would benefit from having “what-if” scenarios ready to go. Having these constructive conversations when time allows is critical.

A realistic perspective and approach from both sides is vital to establishing healthy boundaries for all involved. Asking for help is often pushed aside due to a quest to retain independence. Breaking down that barrier creates a safe zone for the senior and the caregiver to ask for assistance without the stigma of vulnerability and helplessness.

Having the knowledge and resources prior to facing these situations is powerful and ensures confidence when the conversations occur. Meals on Wheels Senior Services of Rockwall County (MOWSS) partners with the North Central Texas Area Agency on Aging to provide caregiver support to guide caregivers and seniors through all stages of life and preparation to relieve anxiety.
