Rockwall, TX (May 9, 2024) – The YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas recently honored local volunteers for their service to the YMCA organization and larger communities they serve.
The YMCA, a volunteer-led organization driven by members, volunteers, staff, and the community, are especially appreciative of those who dedicate many thousands of hours each year towards the Y mission to create healthy minds, bodies, and spirits. Through their service to youth sports, special events, fundraising, senior programs, and more these individuals enrich the lives of those around them and the larger Dallas-Ft Worth community.
Rockwall’s JER Chilton YMCA named Emily Spivey, the Sam Winstead Volunteer of the Year. Emily was selected for her ongoing and consistent dedication to the JER Chilton YMCA swim program. In 2023 alone, Emily served over 150 hours of individual service as swim meet administrator.
“Without volunteers like Emily, our YMCA and organizations like ours could not effectively perform our mission” says Myron Barron, Regional Aquatics Director. “Emily is an excellent example of a servant leader who puts herself above others.”
Emily devotes significant time to this role for each swim meet entering each swimmer’s time, maintaining documents, filing disqualification slips, and managing the flow of the event. Emily also put in a significant amount of time learning an entirely new timing system when the YMCA moved to a new location for the Lonestar state competition. The importance of her commitment to this task cannot be understated as this allowed the organization to be fully prepared to efficiently operate the system for the state meet in Rockwall. Continuing to serve throughout that event, Emily registered over 35 hours of volunteer time just during the Lonestar meet!
Emily’s dedication to seeing a task through is to be commended, especially as she remains on site long after her children have completed their swim and left the facility. Her commitment to JER Chilton YMCA programming makes a difference for the many young athletes who depend on the YMCA program to develop skills and create valuable experiences.
