Garland ISD Student Nutrition Services expands summer meal programs

Garland, TX (June 20, 2024) – Garland ISD is proud to announce the return and expansion of its Summer Meal Program, managed by Student Nutrition Services (SNS). This initiative continues to provide nutritious breakfasts and lunches to children throughout the GISD community.

This year, GISD has broadened the scope of the Summer Meal Program. Alongside existing meal sites at select GISD campuses, the district has partnered with five additional community sites, ensuring that even more children can access healthy meals. These meals are free and available to all children aged 18 and younger; they do not have to be enrolled in GISD. Children do not need to register to receive meals at designated sites, though an adult or older sibling must accompany them. Meals must be eaten on-site.

New Curbside Grab-and-Go Meal Program

In an exciting new development, SNS and the City of Rowlett are introducing a curbside grab-and-go meal program at the Rowlett Utility Customer Service Center at 6602 Dalrock Rd. Meals will be provided on Wednesdays from 6-8 p.m. and Saturdays from 8-10 a.m. from June 19 through July 20. This program offers bundled meals and is open to all families (including non-GISD) in the surrounding areas eligible for this service. However, children participating in lunch at summer meal sites should refrain from using the Grab-and-Go program to avoid duplicate meals.

To ensure enough meals are prepared, SNS asks that families complete an interest form before pick up. Wednesday pickups will include breakfast and lunch for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Saturday pickups will cover Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday meals.

During the first pickup on Wednesday, June 19, SNS served 456 three-day meal packs, totaling 2,736 meals for children in the area. The department is preparing meals for 550 children before the Saturday, June 22 pickup.
