About Chris Wiesinger

Chris founded The Southern Bulb Company in 2004 and set out to recapture that which was once “lost” to the Southern gardener: bulbs that thrive in warm climates. Chris began collecting and learning about bulbs when he was a young boy. He drew on his passion for bulbs for a college project at Texas A&M which then grew into a lifestyle and business. Chris sought out many heirloom and rare flower bulbs like the Red Spider Lily over the years. Mr. Wiesinger was featured in a New York Times story that affectionately dubbed him “The Bulb Hunter” and Chris later used that as the title for his book. In 2013, he wrote “The Bulb Hunter” detailing his life as a bulb collector and farmer. Chris loves to share his passion for life and bulbs with others. His talk shares the stories of collecting, conveys valuable horticulture knowledge of bulbs, offers ideas and examples for using bulbs in the landscape, and delights the listener with a journey filled with beautiful forgotten places.

Heirloom Bulbs, grown in Texas, will also be available for purchase the day of the event. Proceeds from bulb sales will benefit the Rockwall County Master Gardener “Planting Seeds for the Future” scholarship fund.  In the fall of 2024, Rockwall County Master Gardeners began a pilot program to raise money for scholarships. Scholarship funds come from seed sales at the biannual plant sales and educational events. Applicants are Rockwall County graduating seniors pursuing a degree in horticulture or related sciences.  The first scholarship was awarded this June to Avery McInvale. Avery is pursuing a degree in Natural Resource Management at Angelo State University.

Coming soon: A bulb order opportunity for all, regardless of participation in the Bulb Hunter Lecture and Event. Information will be posted on the Rockwall County Master Gardener Association Facebook page and on the website: txmg.org/rockwall.
