Rockwall, TX (February 16, 2026) – An evening of powerful stories and shared mission came together to kick off the J.E.R. Chilton YMCA annual campaign. This year’s efforts place emphasis on building healthier families, creating inclusive communities, and empowering young people to thrive and achieve their dreams.
A Legacy of Building Healthy Families
The Rockwall YMCA has a rich history. Fifty years of service and commitment told through the lens of photos and memories found on the facility’s Legacy Wall.
The Rockwall Legacy Committee was formed to remember and recognize those men and women who gave generously of their time, talent, and treasure to bring the YMCA to Rockwall and led the community efforts in acquiring the land and building the facilities that we still enjoy today.
“Phil Miller played a key role in shaping some of the Y’s many programs,” said Mike Atkins, board member and one-time YMCA Director. “He preferred to stay in the background. A man of commitment and character, quiet leadership, and unwavering dedication, and a willingness to say yes to whatever was needed.” Including Phil Miller to the Legacy Jacket is a symbol of a life dedicated to service, humility, and the values of the YMCA.
“Dewayne Cain and his wife, Ann, grew up in Rockwall and have been part of the community for over 70 years,” said Brett Packer, longtime board member. “In the early 1970’s, Dewayne and Ann saw the need for a perpetual care cemetery and began Rest Haven Memorial Park that has served tens of thousands of families over the years. Dewayne immediately started giving back to the community joining the Rockwall YMCA’s Board of Management, serving as Vice Chair, and actively participating in all three Capital Campaigns.” Dewayne deeply cares for our community, and, as a man of faith, humbly lives his life in service to those around him.
The Rockwall YMCA legacy is founded on passionate ideas and a heart for service.
Fostering Inclusive Communities
When people think of the YMCA, very often the first image is that of youth sports. While a significant program for the Rockwall YMCA, youth sports is just one way the Y brings people together.

Neighbor and YMCA member, Ronald Brant, spoke of the importance of social connection he found at the Rockwall YMCA. Noting that youth and adults find strength physically as well as socially and mentally, Brant went on to say, “The YMCA has a welcoming environment allowing everyone to participate in activities that interest them and help them continue to learn and grow regardless of age”.
The YMCA is a champion of belonging for all.
Programs Empowering Young People
J.E.R. Chilton YMCA enables Clark Wood to be active, build social relationships and communication skills, while remaining busy in productive ways.
Through a mom’s powerful and loving words, Monica Wood shared the impact Rockwall’s dedicated Angel Camp program has on her son. While Clark’s intelligence places him in honors classes at Austin Academy, being autistic he struggles with physical activities. Constantly playing catch up and re-learning skills after even the shortest break, Monica works hard to keep Clark active physically, socially, and mentally.

The YMCA Angel Camp gives Clark something incredibly important – “a place to shine” – supporting him in a variety of activities and getting extra support in physical activities. Perhaps most important, Angel Camp helps him gain confidence, feel safe to ask for help, and creates many moments of belonging and joy. And for Monica, Angel Camp means peace of mind.
The YMCA builds up and empowers everyone to be their best.
Get Involved: Make a Difference
As Rockwall County grows, J.E.R. Chilton YMCA continues to grow as well, expanding reach through the passionate efforts of those who care deeply about their fellow neighbors. The annual campaign serves as a cornerstone of this support for beloved programs benefiting individuals of all ages right here in the local community.

Campaign Chairman and board member, Eric Stacey, urged others to participate in support of the Y and be part of the future of the YMCA, continuing the legacy set before:
- People – Rockwall welcomes a large variety of people, with differing backgrounds and needs but the Y brings them all together.
- Programs – The Y exists to serve the people through numerous programs – providing food to seniors in need, helping young people swim, empowering youth to develop leadership, encouraging physical activity and healthy living – designed for the benefit of the community.
- Purpose – The YMCA motto has a purpose for all. Whether the youngest athlete learns good sportsmanship, or the oldest member seeks to increase strength, programs are centered on building healthy spirits, minds, and body for all.
- Possibilities – The Rockwall YMCA offers a place for everyone to participate in the mission – from volunteering as a coach, sharing the Y message, or donating to the campaign – this is the one place that serves all ages and all needs.
This year’s campaign goal, $247,000, helps ensure no one is turned away and life-changing programs remain available to all regardless of their background or financial situation.
Closing the evening recalling cherished memories, honoring dedicated volunteers, and looking forward with excitement, Harold Young, District Executive Director, spoke encouragingly for the task ahead. Above all else, reminding the team and supporters, that “in everything we do, we are here for all in this community – regardless of age, race, religion, or stage in life”.
