Fate City Council approves transition to standalone Police and Fire Departments

FATE, TX (February 17, 2026) –  The Fate City Council voted 6–0 to formally transition the City’s Department of Public Safety (DPS) into two standalone departments: a Police Department and a Fire Department. The change reflects the City’s continued growth and its commitment to strengthening public safety services for residents and businesses.

As Fate continues to expand, city leadership determined that separating the divisions will allow each department to sharpen its operational focus, enhance specialized training, and better plan for long-term service delivery.

“As our community continues to grow, it’s important that we remain good stewards of public safety” says Mayor Andrew Greenberg.  “This transition allows our departments to grow intentionally while staying focused on meeting the needs and expectations of the residents we serve—today and into the future.”

“Under the new structure, each department will operate independently, allowing for focused leadership, dedicated recruitment strategies, and enhanced accountability within their respective disciplines”, says City Manager, Michael Kovacs.

In the interim, Captain Ryan Ragan has been appointed Interim Police Chief, and Captain John Taylor has been appointed Interim Fire Chief.  The City will begin recruitment efforts for a Police Chief and a Fire Chief in the coming months.

Captain Ryan Ragan, Interim Police Chief

“This is an important milestone for public safety in our city,” said Interim Police Chief Ryan Ragan. “Establishing a dedicated Police Department allows us to sharpen our focus on proactive policing, community engagement, and strategic growth.  I’m honored to serve during this transition and to support our officers as we build a department that reflects our community’s values and commitment to excellence.”

Captain John Taylor, Interim Fire Chief

“Creating a standalone Fire Department positions us to enhance emergency response, strengthen training standards, and continue delivering the high level of service our residents expect,” said Interim Fire Chief John Taylor. “I’m proud to help guide this transition in a way that supports our firefighters and ensures we remain prepared for the future.”

City officials emphasized that residents will not experience any disruption in service during the transition. Police and fire operations will continue without interruption while administrative restructuring occurs.

The restructuring reflects the City’s proactive approach to planning for public safety needs in a growing community and reinforces Fate’s commitment to responsive, professional service.
