City officials deliver meals to homebound elderly during Community Champions Week

(ROCKWALL, TX — March 24, 2017) City officials from the communities of Rockwall, Heath, Royse City and Fate delivered hot meals to the homebound elderly in the county on Tuesday, March 21, as part of the Meals on Wheels March for Meals Community Champions Week. Among the community “champions” packing and delivering meals on Tuesday were Rockwall County Judge David Sweet, Rockwall city councilmen David White, Kevin Fowler, Dennis Lewis and Scott Milder, Heath Mayor Brian Berry, Royse City Mayor Janet Nichol, Royse City city councilmen Tom Crowley and Bruce Bradley, and Fate city councilman Joe Burger.

Designed to generate public awareness about senior hunger and isolation and to celebrate the invaluable services provided by the more than 5,000 Meals on Wheels programs across the country, the annual month-long March for Meals campaign also helps recruit new volunteers for MOWSS programs throughout the country and increases fundraising from local businesses and supporters.

Since 1978, MOWSS has brought assistance for those older adults facing health and mobility issues that cause the need for assistance to foster independence regardless of duration of need. The program provides hot, nutritious, noontime meals – over 45,000 a year – and personal contact to homebound elderly in Rockwall County each weekday. Meals are monitored by a licensed dietician following the State Health Services regulations and meeting one-third of the recommended dietary allowance.
