(ROCKWALL, TX — September 7, 2017) County Judge David Sweet went on goodwill and informational visits to two Rockwall County hotels Tuesday that are temporary homes for victims of the Hurricane Harvey flooding crisis.
Sweet and Joe DeLane, the county’s emergency management coordinator, visited the hotels to inquire about the welfare of the approximately 20 families that lost their homes and have temporary shelter in the Rockwall County hotels.
They also wanted to ensure that the displaced Houston-area residents had details of services that could be provided for them locally.
Sweet and DeLane did not get to meet with evacuees during their hotel visits. They talked only to hotel personnel at both locations.
Sweet said some local churches are reaching out to the victims and he does not want to interfere with their ministry efforts. He said, however, that attempts are being made to coordinate all efforts through Rockwall County Helping Hands.
Helping Hands pamphlets were available at the front desks of both hotels. The pamphlets provide information about how Helping Hands can be contacted and what services could be available to the victims. The information also included how The Health Center of Helping Hands can be contacted.
Local residents who want to help should contact Helping Hands at 972-771-4357. Monetary contributions are preferred at this time, according to Sweet. Donations of clothing are not being accepted, he said.
Sweet and DeLane said they plan to follow-up with hotel personnel to help ensure the evacuees’ needs are met while they are temporary residents of Rockwall County.
