(ROCKWALL, TX — October 30, 2017) Rockwall ISD recently celebrated the opening of Linda Lyon Elementary School with a dedication ceremony. Linda Lyon Elementary opened its doors for the first time in the fall of 2017 to more than 400 students.
“This is a very special day for our Linda Lyon Elementary family. We are so honored to have our school named after such an incredible person and educator as Linda Lyon,” said Megan Gist, principal of Linda Lyon Elementary. “We strive to honor her in our words and actions each and every day.”
Jon Bailey, Rockwall ISD board vice president and former student of Linda Lyon, spoke to the influence Mrs. Lyon had on him. He then read aloud the board resolution he voted for to name the new school after her.
“I had my favorite teachers as I went to Dobbs, Rochell, Rockwall Intermediate and Rockwall Middle School and finally Rockwall High School,” said Bailey. “That’s why it was such an honor and privilege that I voted to name this new facility after one of my favorite teachers, Mrs. Linda Lyon.”
Bailey and another former student, Meredith Reed Fox, unveiled Linda Lyon’s portrait that will hang in Linda Lyon Elementary.
“I’m so proud that my name will be associated with such a fabulous school,” said Lyon. “This is such a wonderful honor and I do still pinch myself on a daily basis.”
In attendance were Rockwall ISD board members, namesakes Linda Lyon, Dr. Gene Burton, Billie Stevenson, Sharon Shannon and Doris Cullins, city and elected officials, representatives from Stantec Architects and NorthStar Construction, students, parents, staff and members of the community.
Linda Lyon Elementary School is a 92,000-square foot facility with a capacity to serve approximately 765 students in Heath, Texas. The building was funded through the 2006 bond program approved by voters.
