(ROCKWALL, TX — December 20, 2017) Rockwall LULAC awarded its first grant from its Education and Scholarship Fund to Rockwall ISD’s Howard Dobbs Elementary School’s Ballet Folklorico Dance Group. The grant was presented to Rockwall ISD’s Director of Fine Arts, Chris Kosterman, and Yanelda Murillo, Lourdes Caballero and Brenda Sandoval-Jones, the Dance Group’s teachers, at Rockwall LULAC’s 2017 Holiday Party. The Dance Group has performed at several community events in Rockwall including Rockwall LULAC’s Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration at Harry Myers Park. The award will be used to help defray some of the costs associated with the students’ costumes.
“Upon reading Rockwall LULAC’s letter awarding the students the grant, I admit I had tears in my eyes,” said the Folkorico Dance Group’s founder and Co-Director, Yanelda Murillo. Before the creation of the Dance Group, “the kids never knew of or had the opportunity to perform to some of these traditional dances,” noted Murillo. “I feel so proud of the students’ hard work, but most importantly, the children feel proud of their culture and of their own hard work.”
“We are also grateful to Our House-Rockwall for hosting Rockwall LULAC’s 2017 Holiday Party, and to American National Bank of Texas for the Bank’s generous contribution to LULAC’s Education and Scholarship Fund which was used to enhance the award to the Ballet Folklorico Dance Group,” said Sol Villasana, Rockwall LULAC’s President.
