Rockwall County 4-H to host Dog Project Class Jan. 9

(ROCKWALL, TX — January 5, 2018) It is not too late to get involved in 4-H for the 2017-2018 4-H year!

Rockwall County 4-H is kicking off 2018 with a new Dog Project Class on Tuesday, January 9th, 6pm, at the Rockwall County Extension Office located at 915 Whitmore Ste. B, Rockwall. The 4-H Dog Project provides youth a fun and hands-on learning experience that develops life skills, as well as teaches valuable information about properly care for animals and the responsibilities that come with it. Youth participating in the dog project learn about general care, nutrition, housing, and health of their animals through workshops and activities such as project meetings. Youth also have the opportunity to develop responsibility, decision-making, nurturing, and communication skills through active participation in the project.

At this first meeting, families will learn from a certified volunteer and dog lover about the expectations of the group, scheduled meetings, and making new friends. This is a great opportunity for families with new pets that were given as Christmas presents; families who need to a better understanding of their dog, and for families who want to have a more productive relationship with their four legged family member. No dogs should be brought to this first meeting but a proof of rabies vaccination is mandatory for future classes.

The Rockwall County 4-H program is part of a community of young people (ages 8 and in 3rd grade through 18) across America who are learning leadership, citizenship and life skills.  4-H is about having fun, learning, exploring and discovering. In 4-H, young people make new friends, develop new skills, become leaders and help shape their communities.  Other projects include clothing and textiles, foods and nutrition, livestock, photography and shooting sports, just to name a few.  Cost to join 4-H is $25 per child per year.

Community Service is also a big part of the 4-H experience. This Christmas, 4-H members donated 103 nightlights and 188 flashlights valued at over $700 to the Holiday Lights for Seniors Drive sponsored by the Rockwall Area Chamber & Visitors Center, Meals on Wheels and the Senior Services Alliance.
