ROCKWALL, TX – September 14, 2020 — Today the Rockwall community celebrated a special milestone for one of its own. Edmond Smajli, a Rockwall High School graduate and son of Luigi’s owner Mario Smajli, was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force.
Edmond was recognized for this achievement this afternoon at Luigi’s with proclamations from Rockwall County Judge David Sweet and Rockwall Mayor Jim Pruitt, honoring Sept. 14, 2020 as Edmond Smajli Commissioned Officer Celebration Day.
“This is truly a tremendous achievement for our family,” Mario said. “I’m so proud of him. To see my oldest child willing to serve this great country is a dream come true. I was so happy to see so many from the community here today to celebrate this special moment.”
Edmond grew up in Rockwall and graduated from RHS in 2015. Following high school, he pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Aeronautics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida. There he earned his instrument rating and accumulated more than hours of flight time. He graduated from Embry-Riddle in May 2020.
Edmond is also a graduate of the Air Force ROTC Detachment 157, and graduated in the top third of Whiskey Flight as well as the total encampment. In March 2018, he earned a pilot slot and in May 2021 will attend Undergraduate Pilot Training in Randolph, Texas at the San Antonio Joint Base.
