ROCKWALL, TX – December 2, 2020 — More than 75 piano and voice students, from beginner to advanced skill levels, participated in the Rockwall School of Music’s Fall Competition on Saturday, Nov. 14. Music professionals from the area were brought in to judge the competition. Students could participate in either the competitive or non-competitive category. The only requirement was that the prepared selection be performed from memory. For some students, this was their first time of challenging themselves with memorizing music and for others, who were more experienced, performing from memory was just standard protocol.
Students were placed in one of nine categories, based on their skill level. There were piano and vocal categories for all levels, beginners – advanced. The three students who scored the highest in each category received a trophy but everyone received a participation certificate with affirmation and helpful tips from the judges.
The Fall Competition was the brainchild of Karen Porter, owner of the Rockwall School of Music.
“Normally this time of the year our students are preparing for our annual holiday recital. However, with the COVID-19 restrictions in place, we wanted to create something new and unique for our students so they could challenge themselves to a higher level of their musicianship,” Porter said. “Students were assigned a scheduled time to perform before the judge. This helped to limit the number of participants in the building at any given time. We’ve been very cautious of social distancing and all the other necessary and important COVID-19 safety procedures. As an added bonus, performing online was also an option for students who were not able to perform in-person.”
