ROCKWALL,TX. (July 29, 2014) For 30 years, Gloria Campos was welcomed into thousands of DFW homes each week in her role as a reporter and later news anchor for WFAA-TV. Now, Rockwall County will welcome the pioneering television journalist as she shares the highlights of her broadcast experiences at the September meeting of the Friends of the Rockwall County Library on September 9th. The 11:00 am meeting will be held in the Community Room of the library, located at 1215 E. Yellowjacket in Rockwall.
Gloria Campos began her career in broadcast journalism in 1976 with KGBT-TV in the Rio Grande Valley following her graduation from Southwest Texas State University (now, Texas State University). In 1984, she moved to Dallas to join the news department at WFAA-TV as a general assignments reporter and then worked her way up to her “dream job,” becoming a highly respected and popular news anchor for the next twenty years until her retirement in March 2014. WFAA devoted an entire week of nightly tributes to Campos before her final broadcast.
“The first major story I remember covering at Channel 8 was the crash of Delta 191 at D/FW International Airport. It was the biggest story I have ever covered, and still is,” said Campos.
Another highlight was anchoring the news with Oprah Winfrey. “When they called me in and said, ‘You’re going to anchor the news with Oprah,’ I was dumbfounded. It was one of the most memorable moments of my career to work with Oprah,” Gloria said.
Campos is well known for her community involvement and especially her interest in education, women and family issues. She started, and for twenty years produced, WFAA’s Wednesday’s Child program that has now grown to provide a safety net of services for children in the protective custody of the state. Long an advocate of the power of education to change one’s life, she endowed a journalism scholarship at her alma mater and is an honorary lifetime member of the Texas PTA.
The recipient of more than twenty major awards and recognitions for her professional journalism career and community service, Campos and her husband, Lance Brown, are the proud parents of twin college-age sons.

The cost of the luncheon, catered by Zach’s Catering, is $20 and payable at the door.

The Friends of the Rockwall County Library is a nonprofit organization that supports the Rockwall County Library. Funds raised by the Friends are used to supplement programs and provide additional books and equipment not covered by the library’s annual operating budget and to support the Adult Literacy Program of Rockwall County.
