(Lewisville) Sept. 24, 2011 – Tim “Eater X” Janus captured the World Tamale Eating Championship in Lewisville Sept. 24 for the fourth time in the event’s seven-year history, downing 67 tamales in 12 minutes to successfully defend his 2010 title. Janus, ranked third in the world by Major League Eating, also won the Lewisville event in 2006 and 2007. He has won all four times he has entered.
The competition was organized by the Lewisville Convention and Visitors Bureau and held in conjunction with the Western Days festival in Old Town Lewisville. It is an officially sanctioned championship of the International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFOCE). Angelina’s Restaurant in Lewisville and Corinth donated the tamales for the contest.
Although Janus fell just short of his world record of 71, he was pushed by a strong and balanced field into posting the second-highest tamale total in the history of the event. Runner-up was Matt “Megatoad” Stonie of San Jose, Calif., a young rising star in the world of competitive eating. Stonie, already ranked 10th by MLE, was making his first appearance at the World Tamale Eating Championship and performed very well by eating 56 tamales in 12 minutes.
Adrian “the Rabbit” Morgan of Baton Rouge placed third for the second straight year, finishing with a personal best of 51 tamales. All three of the top places in Saturday’s competition rank among the eight highest totals in event history. Rounding out the top six were three Texans: Nathan Biller of Frisco, Gary Klucken of Waco, and Brent Ricord of Keller.
For his efforts, Janus took home a $1,500 cash prize. Stonie won $1,000 for second place, Morgan won $500 for third, Biller won $250 for fourth, Klucken won $250 for fifth; and Ricord won $100 for sixth.
The IFOCE (also known as Major League Eating) is the governing body of all stomach-centric sports, conducting more than 50 events annually including the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, N.Y. The competitive eating community, which numbers more than 3,000 veteran and rookie athletes, travels the nation in search of top titles and the glory that they provide.
