(Frisco) Whatever your age, come experience the power and artistry of stories told by some of the nation’s best storytellers at the 8th Annual Lone Star Storytelling Festival on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 14 and 15.
The Frisco Public Library Foundation presents a weekend of top-notch live entertainment at the Frisco Public Library located at the George A. Purefoy Municipal Center, 6101 Frisco Square Blvd.
The fun begins Friday night with a Favorite Stories concert featuring all four of our nationally acclaimed, award-winning storytellers and continues with daytime concerts suitable for families and evening concerts for adults and children ages 10 and up on Saturday.
“Powerful stories can heal, enlighten, or make us laugh,” said Mayra Diaz, Lone Star Storytelling Festival producer. “But most importantly, storytelling connects us as humans with content that is rich in culture and shared experiences.”
This year’s tellers are Grammy Award winning artist Bill Harley; librarian and award-winning teller Gay Ducey; “champion liar,” Bil Lepp; and Tim Tingle, a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.
In addition to bringing in professional storytellers, Frisco Public Library helps keep the art of storytelling alive by teaching area students, 8-18 years of age, the craft of storytelling in a series of extensive training sessions. Auditions are held each spring and those chosen are coached to perform with the professional storytellers.
“Our storytelling librarians enjoy molding young tellers. We have a group of 12 kids who are being trained right now, and we are very excited about their talent,” Diaz said.
Also in the festival line-up is a library open house where the public is invited to sample the programs and resources offered at Frisco Public Library. The open house runs from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15. A varied slate of events including an e-reader and library mobile app workshop, along with puppet shows and story times for kids, and more will be offered.
Proceeds from the Lone Star Storytelling Festival benefit the Frisco Public Library. For more information about the festival and open house visit lonestarstories.org.
