Tribute honors WWII vets, features Debbie Reynolds

(Garland) On Veteran’s Day, the Garland Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Department will host a plaque dedication ceremony to honor 31 Garland residents who were killed in action during World War II.

The ceremony will begin at 5 p.m. at the Veteran’s Tribute Garden on the grounds of the Senior Activity Center, 600 West Avenue A.

World War II veterans from the Garland area will be in attendance, including a Medal of Honor recipient, a survivor of the Bataan Death March and a retired general.

City of Garland Council Member Rick Williams, a Vietnam War Veteran, will host the event.  The National Anthem will be sung by Fireforce, the Garland Fire Department quartet.  World War II veteran Jack McPherson will unveil the memorial plaque and Council Member Williams will read the names of the 31 heroes.  The lowering of the American flag and playing of taps will conclude the ceremony.

The tribute continues into the evening when Oscar-nominated actress and singer Debbie Reynolds performs to a sellout audience at the first of two shows (Friday and Saturday) at the Granville Arts Center. Friday’s show is sold out, but tickets for the Saturday 7:30 p.m. performance are still available at the Arts Center Box Office by calling 972-205-2790.

Reynolds performed in USO shows for many years, including both the Korean and Vietnam wars. She also starred in movies such as Singin’ in the Rain and The Unsinkable Molly Brown.
