Terry Ryan, renowned dog trainer and behaviorist, is coming to Patriot PAWS in Rockwall to teach clicker training in a fun and unusual way – through the training of chickens.
The “Poultry in Motion” Chicken Camp will be March 16-18 at the Patriot PAWS training center, 254 Ranch Trail in Rockwall.
“We are very excited to host this event and offer it to the public,” writes Patriot PAWS founder Lori Stevens in a recent Facebook post. Patriot PAWS provides service dogs to disabled American veterans to help restore their physical and emotional independence.
Why chickens?
The process is “an adventure and a revelation,” according to Legacy Canine Behavior and Training, where Terry Ryan serves as president. “Training a chicken is a stretch and a fantastic boost to your mechanical skills. Chickens are faster than the average dog so your timing and coordination skills are quickly improved. Dog trainers are amazed at how much they learn from their work with chickens!”
Ryan has been a dog training class instructor since 1968. Through Legacy, she teaches pet dog classes, writes books, presents national and international seminars and workshops, hosts interns, and consults.
She has been a competitor and American Kennel Club judge. She’s on the American Humane Society’s advisory board for humane dog training. Terry and her husband, Bill, live in Sequim, Washington with their English Cocker Spaniel, Brody.
