McKinney sees increase in development, population

Population rises again, ranking No. 2 in national growth

(McKinney) Feb. 14, 2012 – Development activity in McKinney is picking up, with an exceptional increase in volume among several key indicators over 2011.

Last year, single family construction increased in volume by nearly 10 percent. While not a direct economic engine, it speaks well of an improved consumer sentiment.

There was also an increase of nearly 25 percent in submittals to the Planning Department. This is the single best barometer of overall activity, both commercial and residential, and represents a tremendous increase over just one year.

“These are the types of indicators we like to see when we are working on moving from the recession to the booming future we know is in store for our city. We are encouraged and excited to see the market turning around dramatically in McKinney,” said City Manager Jason Gray.

Platting is required prior to a homebuilder constructing a home, and platted lots increased by 72 percent from the previous year. While a builder does not have to build a home immediately upon a platted lot, this increase indicates McKinney is likely to see another dramatic increase in activity this year.

McKinney was recently revealed to be the second-fastest-growing city in the country. The population has grown about 135 percent since 2000 and now sits at more than 136,500.

According to MSN.com, “North Texas has a lot of fast-growing communities, and there’s a lot of competition for where people can live and businesses can relocate. But people have been voting with their feet and trooping to McKinney. They like that they’re within striking distance of downtown Dallas, 30 miles to the south, yet at the same time can live in a place that has elements of small-town charm.”
