Blue Ribbon News shines the spotlight on GOOD PEOPLE doing GOOD THINGS, like Frisco Aquatics coach Katy Motsinger, striving make US Olympic Trial cuts
(Frisco) June 8, 2012 – Katy Motsinger, 23, will race the 100-meter backstroke event on Sunday, June 10, in the Texas Senior Circuit Series at the Mansfield Aquatic Club. She competed in the 2008 Olympic Trials, as a student and star swimmer for the University of Denver. Now a coach for local USA Swimming Team, Frisco Aquatics, she’s competing in her last chance meet to make a qualifying time for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials that will be held June 25-July 2 in Omaha, Nebraska.
Motsinger is striving to achieve a time under 1:03.99. Her personal best time is 1:03.72, however that time has expired and she now needs to renew a qualifying time in order to make the Omaha trip. So far this season, her best time is a 1:06.00.
USA Swimming is the governing body for Olympic swimming, so every Olympic swimmer starts on a club team just like Frisco Aquatics. USA Swimming has promoted club level teams, in a campaign called “America’s Team” to unite the entire USA Swimming organization nationwide, so swimmers feel the experience of being on the same team with the likes of Michael Phelps and Natalie Coughlin.
“At first I wasn’t sure I wanted the kids I coached to know I was competing, just because I didn’t want to feel the pressure,” Motsinger shared “but I realized how much support they were giving me and how much inspiration it is for them too.” Many Frisco Aquatics swimmers will cheer her on during Sunday’s meet, but many of the kids that she coaches will be competing for their own personal best times at a meet in Southlake.
Obviously, Motsinger hopes to make the trial cuts, but she hopes no matter what the result is she’ll be sending a message to young swimmers on the team to never give up on their dreams. Ask most young swimmers what they want to do when they grow up, and the majority of them will answer they want to go to the Olympics.
