Class XVI set to begin in September
(Frisco) June 22, 2012- Leadership Frisco, a community leadership program, is continuing to reach out and serve the greater Frisco area through volunteerism and project development. Both the alumni and advisory council of the program have worked to advance annual projects intended to assist for the greater good.
On May 10, Leadership Frisco awarded 12 scholarships to deserving high school seniors through the Frisco Education Foundation. The scholarships were $500 each and presented to two students per high school.
Recipients included: Michael Logan, Preston We, Morgan Lee, Darian Rains, Nathan Lindig, Olivia Boyna, Christian Black, Braeden Bailey, Reeana Keenan, Alexa Bilich, Cameron Hamer, and Ciarra LaRoach.
Leadership Frisco has been providing scholarships annually to Frisco ISD students since 2003.
MindbenderAcademy, originally a Class XI project, experienced another successful year recently. The week-long camp focusing on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) served about 200 FISD middle school students, with many alumni of the Leadership Frisco program volunteering their time. Frisco’s first disc golf course, originally a Class XIV project, opened atB.F.PhillipsParkon April 7. Now a part of the Frisco Parks & Recreation Department, the course – located inside a floodplain – turned land that would not otherwise have been used into a family-friendly experience.
“Think Global, Act Local,” the project of Class XV, the most recent graduated class, is currently kicking off fundraising efforts to revitalize the Frisco Chamber of Commerce. Through cosmetic updates to the Chamber’s building, the project will allow enhanced programs and meeting spaces/services that will permit the chamber to continue to improve its support of local businesses and the economy.
“As a graduate of the program myself, I’m proud of the continuous efforts and work put forth by Leadership Frisco class members and alumni to benefit and better our community,” said Peter Burns, chair of the Leadership Frisco Advisory Council.
A record number of applications were received this spring for Class XVI, set to begin in September. The Leadership Frisco Advisory Council will announce the selected members of that class during the first week of August. For more information, visit friscochamber.com/chamber/leadershipfrisco.
